Classical Arts
India has one of the world’s oldest continuous artistic traditions, spanning dance, music, and visual arts.
Classical dance
- Bharatanatyam — originating in Tamil Nadu, known for precise footwork, expressive hand gestures (mudras), and storytelling.
- Kathak — from North India, characterized by fast spins, rhythmic footwork with ankle bells (ghungroo), and dramatic storytelling.
- Odissi, Kathakali, and Manipuri — regional classical styles, each with distinct movement vocabularies and themes.
Classical music
Indian classical music is built on two major traditions:
- Hindustani (North Indian) — features ragas (melodic frameworks) and talas (rhythmic cycles), performed on instruments like the sitar, tabla, and sarangi.
- Carnatic (South Indian) — emphasizes intricate compositions and improvisation, performed on instruments like the veena and mridangam.
Visual arts and crafts
- Rangoli — colorful patterns made with colored powder, rice, or flower petals at the entrance of homes during festivals.
- Madhubani and Warli painting — regional folk-art styles using natural dyes and geometric or nature-inspired motifs.
- Textile arts — including handloom weaving, block printing, and embroidery traditions unique to different regions of India.
