History & Heritage
Ancient roots
Indian civilization traces back over 4,000 years, from the Indus Valley Civilization to the Vedic period, when the four Vedas — Rigveda, Yajurveda, Samaveda, and Atharvaveda — were composed. This period also gave rise to the Gurukul system: students living with their teacher (guru) to learn not just academics, but values, discipline, and life skills.
A living heritage
Many traditions from this era continue today:
- Sanskrit — the classical language of most Hindu scriptures, still studied for its precision and role in preserving ancient texts.
- Yoga and meditation — practices refined over millennia, now practiced worldwide for physical and mental well-being.
- Ayurveda — a traditional system of medicine emphasizing balance between body, mind, and environment.
India today
Modern India is the world’s most populous democracy, home to extraordinary linguistic diversity (22 officially recognized languages), a rapidly growing economy, and a global diaspora that carries these traditions to communities like Gurukul’s in Washington State.
Bringing it together
This course paired with Hindi 101 and Hindi 102 — and Gurukul’s Vedic Studies and Sanskrit programs — gives a fuller picture of the language and culture Gurukul students carry forward.
