Karak — Case Markers (कारक)

कारक (karak) describes the relationship between a noun/pronoun and the verb in a sentence — similar to grammatical “case” in English (subject, object, possessive). Hindi marks each relationship with a विभक्ति (vibhakti) — a small marker word attached after the noun.

There are 8 karaks in Hindi grammar:

Telling करण and अपादान apart

Both use से, so context matters:

  • अपादान (ablative) — “separation/origin from”: वह दिल्ली से आया। (He came from Delhi.)

Telling कर्म and संप्रदान apart

Both can use को:

  • कर्म (object) — the thing directly acted upon: राम आम को खाता है। (Ram eats the mango.)
